Story

Problem
01.
73% of kids ages 4-12 are afraid of the dark and the things that lurk in it.
Solution
01.
A “friend” that protects kids who are afraid of the dark through the night.

Users

Primary Users
Kids age 4-12
Target Audience
Parents who are willing to spend on their children.

The Current Market

Currently, the nightlight market consists of very simple plugin bulb nightlights, figure nightlights and plush nightlights. We also viewed books such as Corduroy, which pair a book with a plush toy, as our potential competitors. A biaxal map helps identify an opportunity gap in the market.

Initial Idea

A rough prototype was created to better understand the feasibility of the product and the preference of our market.

User Test #1

A survey was sent out to 9 parents and 5 children.
When asked if they would want this product for themselves or their kids.

Iteration

We listened to our users and removed the lighted up eyes of the monster but we found that the monster no longer serve as a good source of light.

Form Ideation

Form plays an important role in the design. We want to create a monster that feels strong enough to keep the children safe but friendly enough to be their friends.

Iteration

We combined several monster’s form to represent our new monster. The location of light source remained under the paw.

User Test #2

A survey was sent out to 31 parents.

01.
45% prefered the monster lighting up when they get down from the bed (via motion sensor)

02.
81% prefered the monster could trigger a brighter light when a motion is detected.

03.
Only 20% were satisfied with the current location of the lights; the top suggestions of locations for additional glow are top paw, back bone area and ears.

04.
90% prefered that the sensor triggered light could slowly fade away instead of immediately switch off.

05.
68% were satisfied with the new color choices (shades of blue and yellow).

Final Prototype

We listened to our users and made iterations accordingly. Below is video mimicking a child getting off a bed.

Next Steps

01.
User test Monster & Me with children in person. This would allow us to observe their first hand interaction with the product.
