Bundle

A group-friendly snowsport app that help turns frustrations to little fun experiences.

Story

In 2018, there was an estimate number of 7 million active skiers and 2.2 million active snowboarders with a total of 470 ski resorts in the United States.

Problem

01.
Not accessible: Average individuals spend 2-3 hours to reach a ski resort by car.

02.
Long lines cause individuals to spend more time waiting than skiing and snowboarding.

03.
89% of individuals prefer to snowboard and/or ski with a companion but many feel frustrated with not being able to find individuals who share similar skill level.

04.
When seeking for self-improvement, many are uncertain about the next steps.

Solution

01.
Users could choose their desired ski resort and search for carpool buddies of interest.

02.
In advanced, users could purchase tickets, rent gears and examine live ski lift traffic.

03.
Users could search for snow buddies and/or have fun in groups with programmed games while keeping each other safe.

04.
Users could improve their forms with Bundle’s customized training programs.

Users

Interviews were conducted with 4 skiers and 3 snowboarders. 100 surveys were sent out to 100 adults in the United States via Amazon Turk.

The Current Market

Ideation

How might we design a recreational snow sport experience that is cost-effective, group-friendly, safety concious, maximizes users’ trail time and is customizable to users’ training?

Information Design

Through a site map, I was able to plan out the main pages of wireframes that were needed for the app. The third hierarchy showcases the connection between the pages. “Ski Resort” and “Profile” are global elements of the app for users to access the pages quickly during their experience.

Design Details

Design Wireframes

With the design time constraint, I chose to focus on three categories in the site map: Group Support, Resort Support and Community.

Accessibility Test

Initially, I planned to use light purple on the call-to-action buttons. After the test, the color was replaced to #5451FF. Each color contrast is above 4.5:1 (AA rating).

Logo Design

Inspired by slopes, snow and togetherness.

Results

Feedback from 2 snowboarders and 2 skiers of targeted user group.

Positive

01.

Achieved design goals: customizable, cost-effective, safety concious, trail time maximizable and group-friendly.

02.
Advanced gear renting received positive results. Users especially enjoyed that the app allows them to save their personal information as it would save them time refilling the same information again and again.

03.
Skiers and snowboarders who often ski and snowboard alone enjoy the community feature.

04.
Gamification of the app engages groups with different skillsets as well as encourages users to revisit their chosen ski resort.
Negative

01.

There is too much going on through the app.

02.
Some were concerned about the reliability and safety of this community matching process.

Next Steps

01.
Iterate on design using user feedback.

02.
Simplify the app by designing a small section of the app - start from resort support (advanced ticket and gear purchase). The rest could be slowly added to the app when the product becomes more mature and has a higher user rate.

03.
Create a prototype and do another round of user testing.
